At times, no browsing

Normally my W2000/SP4 custom desktop runs fine. It was built with SP4
installed 3 years ago, no patches since then, daily browsing (DUN) with
Firefox and Xnews newsreader since then, never *had* problems until about
6 weeks ago.

I don't use MS software except for the OS, no commercial software,
usually small noinstall freeware utilities, has always been very
troublefree.

6 weeks ago, on daily cold boot, worked fine one day, installed nothing,
don't use registry cleaners, etc.

The next day, DUN was normal, Firefox opened normally, but it was not
browsing. I disabled the firewall, no help, I checked seveal things,
everything seemed normal. I changed nothing. I went to another XP
machine, works fine on same DUN connection. I ran several AV programs,
clean results.

The next day, browsing was normal. Normal for the next few weeks, one
day, I sent an email, 5 minutes later it stopped browsing.

I went back to a month-old registry, it started browsing again.

Today it is again not browsing. I'm writing this in another computer.

I have the rollup patch of about a year ago, waiting to install it after
I backup everything.

I just read an earlier post here that says W2K is very vulnerable, will
get infected in minutes unless patched, that is not my experience, SP4
helps with some issues, I'm sure. Careful browsing makes a lot of
difference also.

The way my machine normally works, there is nothing basic wrong, it
worked years OK.

Is there a missing patch that would account for this strange situation,
or what?

At the command prompt try ipconfig /release

also ipconfig /? to see other options

I will try to respond one step at a time, and your post was first.

I tried browsing with Firefox, no luck, closed it.

I then ran IE, pasted in a link (I have no favorites setup in IE), it
could not browse, closed it.

I looked in Windows Task Manager, do not see DHCP Client service
as a running process.

Is there anything
logged in the Event Log when this happens?

In Search, I don't come up with Event Log, how to normally enable it?

I have a utility Event Log Analyzer, under System, it shows this:

First, where is Event Viewer on the hard drive (search didn't find it),
is it a standalone exe?

Then, how do you detect Event ID in Event Viewer? I was just lucky in
selecting the above, see no way view ID. I did not locate 7001.

Since I haven't yet changed anything, it still does not browse.

I'm not sure what the HWiNFO32 Kernel Driver is, you would have to
search the internet to find out more about it, but that error dates from
September 25th, it may just be an old one time only error. It might
help if you clean out the log and work with a clean list of recent and
current events. To clear the log right-click on System Log and select
"Clear all Events", there is no need to save to log before you clear it.
Reboot your computer and try connecting to the internet and then take
a look at your log to see what is going on.

It is a simple executable, I copied it out of the System folder, still
works OK.

I posted data on 20158/9, that's all there is since I cleaned the log, I
guess events 7000/1 are old data, not needed?

Sorry, I forgot the other address- my ISP, but when connected, the DUN
tooltip figures all look normal. Symptoms so far are I can connect to my
ISP normally, can't go on internet. I am typing on a W98 machine using
same ISP.

I tried the commandline ping, not familiar with this method so no luck.
The data was with a GUI utility that copied to clipboard, works well.

Is the machine virus/spyware free?

I used to run several big complex install type AV programs, gave up on
them, now run a few small AV/malware scanners, never show anything.

Is your firewall properly configured?
I have used Kerio on various machines for years, here it browsed Ok for
several years, when I stoppped browsing, first thing to check- disabled
the firewall, no help, but it is properly configured.

Better mention, I have used Firefox from the Netscape days, the current
version I use is 2.0.0.17 for the past 2 weeks, before it was 2.0.0.16
that browsed for about a year OK, then the problem several months ago,
revert to old registry solved that for awhile, a few days ago it came
back. AFAIK, it's not a browser issue.

That means that your Windows 98 box is properly configured and that your
ISP's service is running fine, it doesn't tell us much of anything about
your Windows 2000 browsing problems.

My other XP and W98 machines work OK, so I guess I have to check as above
in each of them, they must be set to "find DNS automatically", or they
would have stopped browsing, as all my computers have the same DUN

Where is the normal log file that keeps track of events in W2K? I just
looked in C: and don't see it.

I don't agree with "Using old software is begging for
problems". I don't want to start a big thread in this, just responding
to you.
I use W98SE on several machines (old software), never had real problems
that I see on the ng's, my W2K (old software) works fine with minimal
patches, careful browsing works for me. I use lots of freeware utilities
and in frequent cases, the next version has problems.

With Firefox, when they went to 3, they stopped using the bookmark
system, so I will plan to use 2.X for a long time in the future. Even
today, in a W98 machine, I went back from 2.0.0.17 to 2.0.0.15 as some
new features didn't work as well as the older version.

My general comment would be- try a newer version cautiously, but save the
older version just in case.

Normally my W2000/SP4 custom desktop runs fine. It was built with SP4
installed 3 years ago, no patches since then, daily browsing (DUN)
with Firefox and Xnews newsreader since then, never *had* problems
until about 6 weeks ago.

I don't use MS software except for the OS, no commercial software,
usually small noinstall freeware utilities, has always been very
troublefree.

6 weeks ago, on daily cold boot, worked fine one day, installed
nothing, don't use registry cleaners, etc.

The next day, DUN was normal, Firefox opened normally, but it was not
browsing. I disabled the firewall, no help, I checked seveal things,
everything seemed normal. I changed nothing. I went to another XP
machine, works fine on same DUN connection. I ran several AV
programs, clean results.

The next day, browsing was normal. Normal for the next few weeks, one
day, I sent an email, 5 minutes later it stopped browsing.

I went back to a month-old registry, it started browsing again.

Today it is again not browsing. I'm writing this in another computer.

I have the rollup patch of about a year ago, waiting to install it
after I backup everything.

I just read an earlier post here that says W2K is very vulnerable,
will get infected in minutes unless patched, that is not my
experience, SP4 helps with some issues, I'm sure. Careful browsing
makes a lot of difference also.

The way my machine normally works, there is nothing basic wrong, it
worked years OK.

Is there a missing patch that would account for this strange
situation, or what?

If the XP & W9x machines are working fine then they are probably already
set to automatically find the DNS server, nowadays almost all ISPs have
their clients use automatic settings obtain IP & DNS addresses.

They're .evt files in the %SystemRoot%\System32\Config folder.
(%SystemRoot% is a variable for the system folder, WINNT on Windows
2000, or the same thing as %Windir%). You can't really read these files
without special tools, use the Event Viewer to view the logs.
