Download KB915597 keeps asking to download again

I downloaded and installed KB915597 some time ago. But every few days, the
balloon pops up and says I have to download it. If I do, and install it
again, it will pop up in another couple of days. If I don't it will pop up
again immediately. If I tell the download window not to bother me with this
download again, it will bother me agaiin in a few days. How do I get rid of
it?

Also Download KB905474. If I try to download this, nothing happens. The
shield in the system tray just disappears.

It sounds like your SoftwareDistribution log files are out of wack. There
is a Datastore.edb file in the DataStore directory that maintains what has
been downloaded and installed on your system.

If you remove the SoftwareDistribution tree, Windows will re-create
everything at next download.

HOWEVER ***************************

This will also remove your Microsoft Update History information, so the next
time you try to review you Update History on the Microsoft Update site,
there will not be anything there except for downloads AFTER you reset the
SoftwareDistribution folder under C:\Windows.

To re-sync:

1. You must Stop the Automatic Update Service and BITS services in
Administrative | Services
2. Remove the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder (or rename it and
remove later)
3. Start Automatic Updates and BITS Services in Administrative | Services
4. Click on Windows Update or Microsoft Update and select Custom

Do whatever you need to do.

Thanks for the answer, but it still leaves me puzzled. What is the "Software
Distribution tree" which you say should be removed?

I see that there is a ReportingEvents.txt file in the Software Distribution
folder, and this says that KB915597 has been downloaded and installed over 25
times. Is this the folder you want me to delete?

What do you mean by "Do whatever you need to do"?

No. If you look there is a folder called C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.
Under that folder there are many folders ... the key one's involved are
DataStore and Download. If you remove these folders, as outlined in the
steps, the next time you go to Microsoft Update, Microsoft Update will
rebuild the SoftwareDistribution tree folder (re-creating DataStore and
Download).

If you remove the ENTIRE tree, Windows will re-create everything.

Make sure you understand the HOWEVER *********.

I meant by "Do whatever you need to do", meant after using the Custom
option, and you are notified of updates ...
Do whatever you need to do.

IF YOUR LEARY OF REMOVING SoftwareDistribution, rename it. Then you can
remove it later when you are comfortable.
