Looping Defender Definition Update

Getting notified that definition update is available (1.14.1314.1 KB915597)

I click the option to download, then click the option to install.

Everything installs fine - and the 'Updates are ready' taskbar icon
disappears.

Couple minutes later it re-appears prompting the same update.

This has just started today, and its sort of annoying.

In case you need to know:

Follow the resolution on that page (cut and paste that nice long bit into
run!). I had the same problem and this solved it.

Good luck, Rich

I have been suffering exactly the same "looping" problem. I have tried the
KB915597 fix but it did not work for me. The error message started "The
Patch could not be opened..." Then it was back to the looping again. There
must be an answer to this apart from removing Defender from my machine :-((

Hello Vince here. This update problem has been seen before. I got the same
problem today when i tried to update Windows Defender Signature Version
1.14.1288.5
Discussions and answers to this fix are seen on my post called "Windows
update keeps saying I have the same update, posted here on 3-01-06.

These steps generally work.

Step 1. Please try Windows Installer Clean Up Utility Tool:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Download, install and run from the start menu. On the list of installed
products, pick Windows Defender Signatures--You might want to note the
version listed., select that and hit remove.

Step2: Remove the current signature file. to do this, click start, click
run, type
Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-92D3-03874BBD4C2C}

Step 3: Open Windows Defender, On the bottom you should see the new updated
Sigature Version listed.

Step 4: Run Windows Update and you should no longer see that Windows
Defender has an update.

If this works for you, I highly reccommend printing this page since this
update issue has already occrrued twice for me.

Hi Vince.
I had already picked up on that fix from you previous post. Unfortunately it
does not work for me with Defender.

Richard.

Ran the Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C} fix and it solved
the problem of KB915597 reminding me every few minutes to download this
update. I am KB915597 update free. Make sure that you run Updates from
Defender.

To Update Windows Defender:
1. Run Windows Defender
2. From the Home page, click on the down arrow to the right of "?".
3. Click on "About Windows Defender".
4. Click on "Check For Updates".

Hello everyone. Vince Here. Just to let you know that on 3-08-06, I received
another update for Windows Defender with the same KB915597 but the Signature
Version was different at 1.14.1315.1
This new update put me back in a loop. Followed the same instructions posted
here for a fix and now 1.14.1315.1 was fully installed and Windows Update is
no longer saying I have a Windows Defender Update. I hope this is not a
continuing issue. If so, we know what must be done each time Windows Update
puts us in a Defender Update Loop.

Vince
