I have winds xp homeedition,I have winds updates turned
on for automatic download.for the last 3 days I have the
download icon in my tool tray by the clock, when I hover
over it w/mouse it says;downloading updates:0%.I am on 56
k modem dial up modem, and I have stayed online for 12
hours and the download icon never changes on the
percent.so what I am asking is there a problem with the
download of automatic downloads of updates??? can anbody
answer this question??
Thanks Bill
I have a pc with pent4,2.66ghz,60 ghz hd
.
I think you mean,60 gigabyte not gigahertz,but anyway I
think it may take you several days to get,its 275,000,000
bytes,My cable runs at 3,800,000 BPS and took 35 minutes-
your 56,000 dial up may run at 35-40,000 BPS if your
lucky and not using your connection for anything else.So
if your surfing and downloading your not going very
fast,it will take you a long time, you may want to wait
for the disc to come out and order it from MS.Or leave
your computer on for several nights to get it.Ok lets do
the math 3.8 megs took 35 minutes which is 95X faster
than 56k modem, which turns out you'll need to leave your
connction on for almost 45 hours without using it at
all.If you do use it it will increase the load time. It's
a shame to have such a fast computer and not be able to
relize the benifit of a fast connection.I have a 1.0 GHz
and a 1.3GHz and they run very fast for me,it's all about
the connection speed, unless you doing some kind of video
editing or something like that where you'll use a
processor like that,You may want to look into something
faster than dialup.Dialup AOL wants what $24 bucks, give
them the boot get say ahhh SBC DSL for $27,the listed
speed is 750,000 to 1,500,000 BPS 3 bucks more and your
at 15 to 20 X dialup speed,and it won't tie up a phone
line, and you won't have to worry about dial out spyware
running your bill up.No more GOODBUY either. If your on
one of those $9.95 ones they run at less than 20,000 BPS
I've done some study's for outsource study data,Walmart
connect(believe it was compuserv,had aol # thou)(very
rude support and disconnect)ran at 15-18,000 BPS,Net zero
9.99 is a zero I would have to check my okd reports, but
think it ran at 10-12,000BPS.AOL ran anywhere from 35,000
to 49,000 depending on how you tweak it,tho they limit
your bandwidth, when you reach it or are using too much
you'll here goodbuy they kick you off.Cable depending on
the company you'll get 1.5 to 2.5 megs OK but the price
can get up in the $40 and up range. If your in a Wide Open
West zone they have different speeds and run pretty close
to what they promise,a package deal with cable, you can
get it for $25 for 5X faster than dialup.Just something
to look at.If people keep getting these 2.0-3.0+ CPU's
i'm going to have to upgrade for work related tests.Good
Luck my freind,God speed to you.
