I've set my XP to download updates only, but after downloading the icon
disappeares from the taskbar. When I shutdown my system XP starts to install
the
downloaded updates but that's not what I want.
How can I get the yellow icon back in the taskbar so I can select which
updates I will install? Or ... which command do I have to start to get the
utilty that is shown after normaly clicking the yellow icon after downloading
has been done?

set it to notify you if an update is available
then go to the update website and do a custom scan
that way you can pick what to update

Adding to peter advice try this:
Open Windows Explorer and locate this path:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution = Delete all Folders in The Right
Pane/window, close the windows Explorer.
Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories>> System Tools >> Security Center.
There check the Radio Button for Notify me but don't Automatically download
or install them.

Click OK and Run Disk CleanUp on your Hard Drive Reboot your machine and see
if the Yellow Shield will pop-up and alert you, if it did double click it and
you can see what Updates on Offer by select Custom Install.
HTH.
Let us know.
