Im using XP home SP2 and when I use the search function to look for anything
in th my documents folder, it brings up two copies with the same file
path...it's really bugging me, cuz i don't know if it's taking up double the
space

Hi Sandstar,

If you recently opened up the file in My Documents folder, a copy is created and placed in recent opened documents. So you have two copies of the same file. If you wish to empty the list, right-click on Start and click Properties. On the Start Menu Tab, click on Customize....

Once Customize is opened, click Advanced tab. At the bottom, there under Recent documents, you see Clear List. Click it. Clearing this list does not delete the documents. There is also a place, where you can create a link to Recently opened documents on the Start Menu, by checking List my most recently opened documents. Click OK. Click Apply then OK. When you open Start or click Start, there is a link to My Recent Documents.
