Doubleclicking xls file launches application but does not open fil

It launches Excel but freezes. Yet you can open Excel and open the same file
just fine. Anyone have any ideas on what causes this and how to fix it?

Open Excel, click on Tools, Options, select the General tab, and untick
Ignore other Applications. OK out. Exit Excel, and try opening a file by
double clicking on its name.
