Doubleclicking xls file launches application but does not open fil

Since last few days doubleclicking an xls file is not launching excel and
opening the file. The Excel will come up up but the file is not opened.
I can open the same file by launching Excel and then using file/open option.
Could you please help ?

On the other note , who do i open each xls file in different application.
If a file is already opened and one try try to open another file, it opens up
in the same application and workshhet.
