Doubleclicking desktop IE shortcur only copies shortcut

Hi,

I have a weird behaviour of my desktop's default IE shortcut. When I
doubleclick it, all I get is a new copy of this shortcut with names like
Internet explorer (1)..(2) etc!

When I drag the same shortcut to the quickstart toolbar it bahaves
normally. All my other desktop shortcuts behave normally and executes
their application when double-clicked. (No swapped mouse buttons etc...)

I have tried to delete the shortcut and recreate it from Desktop /
Properties / Desktop / Customize desktop ...

What is going on? How can I get this beastie to behave normally..?

Tnx for tips ;-)

Right click on the shortcut and select properties, what does the shortcut
target display?

Start > Run: Regedit. Navigate to these keys:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}\shell\OpenHomePage\Command
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}\shell\OpenHomePage\Command

Make sure that the default value (REG_EXPAND_SZ, right pane) equals
"%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

Scan the system for Malware as well.

Fix File Associations. Try the LNK and the EXE repairs.

Nope. These fixes apply if *all* files with these extensions are affected.
Anyway, Doug's site offers an "Internet Explorer Desktop Icon fix (Restore
the default behavior for the Desktop IE icon)" which should fix the OP's
problem. That .reg file equals basically the posted registry tweak, however,
it's more comprehensive.

Hi,

Sorry for some days abscense and thanks for the replies.

Unfortunately none of the suggestions worked out. When I right-click
the IE icon it displays the 'normal' menu items with the Internet
properties at the bottom.

I have manually checked the registry entries and applied the .reg file,
but to no avail.

As a temporary solution I have created a 'normal' shortcut to IE and
erased removed the default one.

Any other suggestions?

When you right-click the shortcut, what item is at the top of the list?
Is it, or another option highlighted?
