Copy-Paste Fails

T

tarzan

At first I thought I was doing something wrong. But it keeps
happening, so I have to ask -

I am using XP SP3 -
I press control c for the copy and control v for the paste, but I get
nothing from the paste as if it has simply 'lost' the copy.

A specific case was this AM when I tried to copy the web address of a
site I was accessing into the address box into a new desktop shortcut.
Seemed to behave normally, but I get nothing.

This does not happen all the time, just most of the time.

Is there a setting that needs tweaked to correct this anomaly?

Thank you

I get similar symptoms from time to time. It seems to be related to
other programs running at the same time, but I haven't been able to pin
it down to which one. The other program seems to intercept or interfere
with the keystrokes, rather than affecting the clipboard. I usually get
normal function back by closing all running apps down, or logging off
and back on, or rebooting.

Consider anything that automatically runs on login (anti-virus, etc.)
to be culprits.

There is no tweakable OS setting that affects this.

A couple of possible fixes are mentioned. May fix your problem as
well, good luck.

Try using the alternative keyboard shortcuts for copy and paste:

CTRL-INSERT = COPY
SHIFT-INSERT = PASTE

Note: may not be supported by programs that don't use Windows' native UI
library.

Happens on my Win98's too. I found that if I change from trying to scoop
up text to placing an iage o the palette then go back and scoopup text it
has always worked.

ctrl-c fails, so alt-Print Screen, THEN ctrl-c works again.

I _usually_ find that what I thought I'd highlighted before ^C-ing turns
out not to be highlighted after all, when I go back to the source
application. (Which still begs the question of what changed/prevented
that.)

some html documents have ctrl-c blocked on them.

I used to try to scoop up info from a 'search' website 'service' phone
numbers, names, etc, but could NEVER get a highlight to appear in order to
ctr-c the information, always had to manually write down the information,
until...
I copied the html to disk, then went through with a text editor, removed
block, then reopened, voila! I could easily then highlight and crt-c the
section I needed.

only mention as a 'Tip of the Day' type thing.

XP is supposed to have a clipboard viewer, called "ClipBook Viewer". Clipbrd.exe.

I have a similar problem that comes and goes. It's the cntl-C that
doesn't work because when I go to paste, I get whatever was in there
from before. I can do cntl-V several times and each time, still
paste what was in there before.

OTOH, pressing c alone always gives me a c, or C as expected.. So
it sounds like it's the cntl-button, but that always works for other
things, including cntl-V

Sometimes I highlight, then hold down the cntl key and hit C over and
over and over again 10 or 15 times. I think that has always worked.

Sometimes it will go for months without a problem.

I don't want to change keyboards because I have an especially good
multimedia keyboard. 19 extra buttons, although I really only use 8
of them. If I had a plain keyboard, I'd definitely try a different
one.

I just tried JJ's suggestion and it emulated cntl-c and v, but since
I'm not having a problem now, I don't know if it will work when there
is a problem. I plan to try then. Thanks JJ.

I can never, ever remember the world Clipboard. (You may have notice
that my other post in this thread avoided using any term for it.)
Even though I never dealt with it by name or otherwise, I always want
to call it the ScratchPad Area, SPA, a mainframe term. So strange.

This has been today's Deep Thought.

I know exactly what you mean ...

Ditto. Same for other keys like print screen (with and without alt key). :(

I have a similar one with shift-delete: the shift sometimes doesn't
register. Seems to be only that combination though. I just live with it!

Just to let you know it is not you. i have this happen occasionally. It
seems to be the mozilla email client which will occasionally not accept
copied matter --- I say copied matter because if i go to a fresh notepad
page and do CTL-V, it is there.....

some html documents have ctrl-c blocked on them.

And on those, usually if you do CTRL-A, you get what you wanted (and the
rest of the page, which you did not want....)
