mouse copy/paste

xp, having folder with 150 text files, displayed in win explorer right pane.
wanting to copy them all.
select first, shift-rightclick last to select whole range. but when
right-clicking on selection to make pop-up for copy, nothing happens.

the same time, pressing ctrl-a, ctrl-c on [same as above] selected right
pane, and later ctrl-v on destination folder make copy/past.

is my win xp config wrong since i may not have right click pop-up on
selected 150 files, while on ther same time keyboard shortcuts work as
expected? gui copy of small number of files still works with mouse as
expected.

does it mean that keyboard shortcuts are more powerfull than gui mouse
copy/paste?

[not to say that copying from cmd prompt "copy *.txt newfolder" also work
for unlimited number of files]

any comment?
thnx

You don't want to shift-right-click to do this. You want to select the
first file in the series by left-clicking on it. Then hold down the
shift key and select the last file in the series by *left*-clicking on
it. This will select all of them you want. *Now* you'll be able to
right-click on any of the selected files and get the Copy/Move/etc.
context menu. Same thing for using Ctrl instead of Shift when you want
to copy multiples items not in sequence.

sorry, i made type [see above].
of course that obtained range by leftclicking first and
shift-leftclicking last to have selected range.

but still positive not to be able to bring up context menu after
rightclicking selection, few seconds shown hourglass, and then return
to regular pointer.

also, this behaviour not on all computers, is there something i may do
to correct such a behaviour? this one [faulty] is a notebook came with
xp pro preinstalled.

Look in Event Viewer for clues as to what is happening.
Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

Check for faulty right-click context menu entries put there by third
party software. The easy way to do this is with the free ShellExView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

How large are these files (roughly)? IOW, are you trying to copy 150
files that are 100MB each?

Did this function ever work correctly? If so, what changed between the
time things worked and the time they didn't?

there is no items in event viewer with the timestamp close to time when i
tried to bring up rightclick context menu.
these 150 files are tiny txt files [pure text], just few kb each

i'd succeeded to narrow the problem:
it happens [not bringing up rightclick context menu] when have focus on
shared folder on w2k server.
user [i boot up my workstation to] initialy has no access to this shared
folder, so i have to supply valid domanin\username & passwd when browsing
folders through windows explorer.
but at the same time [same shared network folder] i am able to bring up
rightclick menu on *fewer* selected files

up to [including] 138 files are ok, 139 [and more] selected fails on
bringing up rightclick context menu!

files names are rather long, 30 chars, maybe some buffer gets overflowed and
confused when trying to swap out to foreign network drive?
at the same time, there is *no* problem when working with same file set
previously [with cmd prompt] copied to local folder.

since i may copy fileset part-by-part, or completely from cmd prompt, this
is not a *hard* problem, but more of curriosity, to better understand xp
behaviour.

any idea/test i may try to isolate the source of problem? or is the real
limitation working with xp & foreign domain w2k?

thnx

There is no limitation in copying files from a domain if the
workstation's user has been authenticated on the domain. Without
looking at the setup in person, it's hard to say what exactly is going
on but I'd suspect incorrect permissions on some of the files or even a
hardware problem. It sounds like the workstation is losing contact with
the server. Perhaps looking in the *server's* Event Viewer will give an
idea of what is failing.

thnx on your atention.
problem appears to be quite complex, involving server and network activities
as well ...

just to mention [as the last info about this topic] that when the same
network folder is mapped as a drive [letter], on the same selected number of
files, rightclick context menu also appears almost immidiately [like it was
local folder]
and looking on taskmngr's network throughoutput diagram, each case:
selection with mapped drive, selection with full path and unsuccessfull
selection have different footprint.

Well, happy hunting. Maybe someone else can tell what's wrong from your
description but I'm afraid I can't. Good luck and if you figure out the
solution, it would be great if you would post it for the archives.
