Doubel-click doesn't open file

I've suddenly lost th ability to "doube-click" on a file and acatujally open
it..
I double-click on a "*.doc" file and Word opens but not the file I clicked on.
Same for an "*.xls" file - Excel opens but not the file I clicked on.
I can open that same file from that same location once Word or Excel is open
if I use the "FILE-OPEN-(location)" method....
But "double-clicking" on a file associated with any of my "Office 2003"
applications doesn't actually display that file within the appropriate
application.
It worked olnly last week, but now suddenly its "gone"...
Arguably this may have happend when the new version of Norton Internet
Security 2006 was installed on the PC ... but I hadn't notice it
immediately...
Just in the past few days....

Just a guess, but go to control panel / mouse
and make sure your mouse buttons are set up correctly

Click Start | Run | winword /r |OK

Click Start | Run | excel.exe /regserver |OK

Well, that was a good try - but unfortunately, it didn't have any affect.
I suppose I could try un-installing all of Office 2003 and re-installing it
with the hope that it might have some effect on this unfortunate situation,
but so far, simply "reinstalling" or "repairing" the present installation
hasn't worked.
So far, I've tried that twice....

It occurs to me ... wouldn't this be some sort of registry problem related to
ALL "associated" applications in Windows?
I say this because...
Having done a litle additional "research" I find that "double-clicking" on
any type of file - not just a file type associated with Office - opens the
associated application but does NOT open the file that was clicked on.
I tried making a new ".txt" file with a few words in this file (ie: "test")
and this file will not open with the asociated program (wordpad) either.
Wordpad "comes up", but the text document does not appear in wordpad...
(BTW - it seems that there is no way to associate the "notepad.exe" app with
anything insofar as this little text editing app is no longer "available" as
an available choice to associate a file type with... I wonder how that
happended...??)

So - as an update...
I've "reset" some things in Windows so now I CAN open files that at
'intrinsic' to Windows (IE: wordpad will open an associated file and display
it in that application - er, however, I still do not have the ability to
associate "notepad" with anything - it simply isn't "on the list" any more
which is no doubt a failure somewhere of notepad being "registered" with
Windows now...)
However, all file types associated with MS Office 2003 Pro will NOT open in
the associated application when I "double-click" on it.
The app opens but no file is displayed...
God, this is frustrating....
I guess next I'll fully un-install Office and re-install it - and just hope
things return to "normal"....
