.DOT

I use Word 97.

When I open Word, File, New, it gives me my own .dot files.

However, there are files there that I want to delete that I do not see on my
explorer in my C:\Program files\Microsoft Office\Template.

How can I delete them?

Can you specify which files it is that you want to delete?

Yolande,

Those files are normally installed to:

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

of course you can delete them, you may want to move them
to another directory just in case you want them someday.

I see these files and all my others when I use File, New, but when I go to
my C: Templates, I have 3 files that are not there, so I cannot delete them
and they still appear in File, New.

The files in C: Templates.

I can see some files when I open Word, File, New and when I go to the
templates of Word in my C:, there are not there, so I cannot delete them.

If the templates are your creations, the ones listed when
you click File | New are contained in the location
specified when you click...

Tools | Options | File Locations: note the directory there
where templates are saved and stored.

You can also do a wildcard search for *.dot from your
Windows search utility. Just be very careful about which
ones you delete. Normal.dot contains your personal
settings, but will be recreated if it's accidentally lost.
You will lose all your personal settings however. Also
check...

Maybe I did not explain correctly in English what happens :

With my Options, Tools, the location of my personal templates is :
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates.

We work on a network here and there are some templates located in :
W:\Off97R26\Templates that I can access.

When I go in my own templates and right-click 2 of these templates, I see on
the properties that they are located in the W. All the other are located in
my own C:

I cannot delete these two templates as the access is denied. I can access
them with File New DTR (that they have open here). But they are also in my
File New General (that are only my templates) and I want to get rid of these
two in my own templates.

I hope I have explained my problem better.

Any ideas?

Okay, it appears that you've got both user templates and workgroup
templates. This is something I have no experience with, but perhaps other,
more network-savvy users can help. I suspect, though, that this is a problem
that you'll have to take up with your network administrator.

Hi Yolande

I hope I've understood your story. If so, then this information might help.

At Tools > Options > File Locations, Word records the folder for your workgroup templates.

If that folder is set to W:\Off97R26\Templates, then any templates at W:\Off97R26\Templates will show on your General tab when you
do File > New. Any templates in say, W:\Off97R26\Templates\XYZ would be on the XYZ tab when you do File > New.

That is, the General tab shows templates from your User Templates folder *and* from the root of the Workgroups folder.

So, there may be templates on the W: drive that appear on your General tab. And your systems administrator would have made the W:
drive read-only. So you won't have permission to delete them.

You will therefore have to talk to your IT systems administrator people.

Hope this helps.
