I have a trilogy of old dos games that I have been trying to make work in
xp. Is there anyone here who can help me get them working? It is the "Eye of
the Beholder" by SSI. I have sp1, 1000mhz pentium, almost 400Mb of ram
nvidia mx 440.

Thanks In Advance

Oh boy. I'm afraid that XP (and 2000, and all Windows based on NT),
don't really handle DOS games well.

Anyway, try running it. If you can see the game (the graphics and stuff
all work), then your in luck. All that you need to do is to get the audio
working. Go to http://ntvdm.cjb.net. Get VDMSound and install it. You can
then right click on start.exe (start.bat for EOB3), and select "run with
VDMSound". Then your audio will work and you'll be playing it.

Some people (like me), have can't play old DOS games because the
graphics don't work either. :( But, a lot of people can get them to work
with VDMSound.

#1:
Edit the config.nt file.
change the files= statement to 120
add this command: ntcmdprompt

#2:
Right-click the shortcut to the app and go to the
compatibility tab. Enable it.

#3:
Reboot

I've had success getting dos programs to speed up doing
this, but have not come across one that won't run to test
this out on.

Thank you. I have been able to see it but not get sound. You may have solved
my problem. I will post back and let you know.

I will try this as well but I think Alec answered with the solution I need.
Thank you.

Its such a shame I think. Before, when hardware was more expensive, I wasn't
able to play these games. Now that I finally have good enough hardware to
play these games, it gets tricky.

What the heck are you talking about. DOS games were made to run on crappy
286 machines with 16Mb ram and everything in vesa buses. I ran them just
fine on mine. I never had a problem until I got to 98se and my soundcard
didn't work with them anymore and that was because I was too cheap to get a
new card.

You are more likely to find someone who knows in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.games
