Doom 3

Hi all,
I have installed the Doom 3 demo before getting the game, and even on the
lowest settings and resolution it has a terrible frame rate, making it pretty
unplayable.
My system is well above the minimum specs, and all other games run fine on
my laptop. . .intel 3.0ghz HT, 1gb ram, 128mb ATi Radeon 9600.
I have read the game, though demanding, has also been optimised for low end
systems and should run smoothly.
The game has a settings optimiser for any system, but nothing seems to help
much.
As anyone got any tips for getting a smooth frame rate. . .I have tried all
the usual things like checking drivers, defrag, etc.
Is there a patch for the full game which addresses performance problems?
Thanks for any help in advance,
Maurice

Did you un-install the demo before installing the full version? And even
if you do, sometimes there files left behind, for instance the sys or
ini file of the game. There might have been also entries 'leftover' in
the registry from the demo. These might interfere with the full version.
You could also try to install into a different directory, eg
c:\games\doom3. With regards to patches you might want to look at avault.com

Thanks Thomas for taking the time to reply to me. I have tried this but it is
still the same. I wonder if it could be a problem with something else like
Intel processors?

Maurice.

You should also define what you call “unplayable†because some people
consider games unplayable if they’re getting anything lower than 60 FPS! Do
you know what’s the average FPS you’re getting while playing Doom3?

I think you won’t get a lot of FPS with a 9600 card, even at the lowest
quality setting, cos we’re talking about Doom3, :) But there are ways to
tweak the config file so you’ll get more FPS. These two links below should
help you do this:

Hi Paul,
The game optimal scan puts my system at medium quality, but I am still
getting a very low frame rate at the lowest setting on both resolution and
settings.
Cheers,

Hi Ray,
I'll check out your suggestions regarding tweaks and finding out FPS. I'm
not too greedy with getting 60fps. It's just that the frame rate on the demo
is so low when I actually run into a zombie that the screen almost freezes
then starts again and aiming is impossible. How's that for a technical reply.

Do you run your Laptop with the Power Cord plugged in? Many Intel Processors
in Laptops switch to 600 MHz if running on Battery or if the CPU isn't
needed much (called Speed Stepping).

Maybe this is what makes Doom3 lag so much?

Hi Michael,
Thanks for your replay. . .I always have the power cord in for that.

Maurice.
