I actually think Doom III is a classic, its reminds me a lot of Half-Life.
BTW I think its more atmospheric being darker, you use the flashlight :)

My take on it after playing it a few days now, is that it is a good game.
It has a lot of the same hair raising quality that the original doom had.
It does not have a map toggle. I need help cause I get lost easy. This
game is not as fun as Call of Duty was. BTW, if Doom3 is too dark it's easy
to turn up the monitor brightness a little. That's what I did and it looks
pretty good. Still has the shadowy effect but I can see who's attacking me
a little easier.

You don't need to try to do that...

Its an 8/10 game and Im disappointed because
after all the work of making a very good engine
it could easily have a great game. If someone asked me if its worth buying
I'd say yeah (for £25 online) but don't expect the second coming. I think
that Far Cry IS a better game plus the support work they're doing adding
more shader support etc .. is a lesson to the whole industry. looking
forward to HL2.

Could Doom3 end up being the least pirated game in use EVER? People
will download it, install it, realise how shite it is and delete it
forever.

I respect your right to dislike the game. Thing is, id has a habbit of
remaking the same themes, which is some of the reason Romero left years ago.
The game is what they said it would be, a remake of Doom. It is a straight
up shooter that has atmosphere unlike most other shooters, dark shadows and
great sound, which I think makes for a very scary game. Is it a lot of the
same thing? Yes. Most on this group are pissed because their 9600xt won't
run it properly. Just my 2 cents.

My 9600XT runs it just fine. As for the sound. I don't think it's that
great. They should have made some cool background music to further enhance
the mood, like the original Doom had.

Then you must get lost in your own bathroom if those maps are too
complicated for you ;)

The sound and the lighting effects together are what create an immersive
atmosphere. I just don't think some are capable of grasping this. Oh
please, let's have another game with crack fed heavy metal music driving it.
And sorry, I shouldn't have mentionen your 9600xt, but what does fine mean?

Immersive atmosphere is certainly NOT created by shiny graphics and spooky
noises . They may contribute, but if the game hasn't got a solid base that
revolves around objectives, exploration and how the players actions affect
the whole game, then no amount of bump mapping or real time shadows will
help.

Craig

I guess in the final analysis, immersive is a personal thing. I think
the game is completely immersive and the use of dark places helps create a
scary atmosphere. Some might not get the full affect based on their
hardware.
If it hadn't taken so long to get this game out, we wouldn't all be
having the time of our lives ripping it up. It's tough to meet expectations
under those circumstances. I'm more pissed at Valve as I have been sitting
on a HL2 voucher for over a year and the 9800xt i bought is almost two
product cycles old. Now I have serious expectations there!
I think the game is obviously a hit, but there are some things not to
like. Maybe it is a step backwards in terms of innovative game play, but
the lighting and sound is very cool. To each their own.

Well, fine to me is relative to what I expect for a pleasant gaming
experience. The 9600XT runs it in 800x600 with medium qualtity, no aa, at
smooth frame rates. That's good enough for me. It looks pretty good. I
can't see spending more than $150 for a video card. I'm not rich and do
have other priorities.
