Donwloading e-mails from server

Hi,
This is probably a very basic and obvious question, but I'm having
trouble downloading my e-mails. Was using Pegasus mail before and as
default it would download messages onto your harddrive and take the
load off of the e-mail server. Outlook seems to just acces the mail
from the server.
When I have got not many messages at all I get constant messages
telling me I need to empty my mailboxes.

As part of my PhD I'm doing, I'm subscribing to a few bulletin boards
on various topics, it would be very useful to be able to keep this
content.

Is there an option to download messages so I never have to fear of
filling up my server, it seems like there should be???

What kind of mail server are you getting your mail from? Is it a POP3 or
IMAP server?
 
It's an IMAP server, does this make a big difference? Just have used
another e-mail client which has successfully downloaded all my messages
from the server each time I check my mail.
 
IMAP servers typically keep their mail local so you can access it from
anywhere. Outlook won't delete an item from the server unless you
specifically tell it to delete them. It's one of the nice features of IMAP -
that you can look at your mail from anywhere since you manage it on the
server.

IMAP servers always retain the messages on the server unless you explicitly
issue a delete command.

Pegasus Mail handles IMAP accounts a little different than MS Outlook;
Pegasus Mail keeps IMAP messages in a local store for offline access. I
would expect MS Outlook to have an option similar to the Mozilla suite mail
client to make email available for offline reading. I could be wrong.
