Apparently, should be able to individually compress a NTFS folder in xp
office via File>New Compressed Folder and should subsequently be able to
password protect said compressed folder via selection and then File>Add
Password. Don't seem to have these options on my build - can this be
configured ?

TIA

How are you trying to compress the files or folders? You should be
able to right click on the file or folder, select properties,
advanced, and then check off the compression box. Folders are
protected via permissions in XP Pro.

It is only available in Pro, and there you have to go first to Folder
Options - View and uncheck 'Use Simple File Sharing'
