I made the mistake of trying to change my Vista Business desktop icon font
so it was readable. It can't be done. But as a consequence of my attempts, I
am getting all kinds of strange responses from other programs. So BE WARE,
don't mess with Vista or it may seek retribution!

Where and how did you try to change the font? I had no problem switching in
the Advanced options of "Window Color and Appearance."

Yes, get to the Advanced Options and scroll to ICON. Now change the type
font/size and your desktop icon font will change. But note you can't change
color. And it's another challenge (I can't remember how I found that check
box) to get rid of the drop shadow for the type.

I think if , like XP, you switch to Windows Classic desktop, you lose the
font restrictions. I'm still experimenting. I only want Ariel black text for
my icon labels on the desktop and Windows Aero... but it's not to be.

Here is the location of that check box again. Open Control Panel and type
effects in the search box. Click on "Adjust the appearance and performance
of windows."

Scroll down to the bottom of that dialog box and remove the check mark from
the "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" option. This will
remove the shadows.
