Having an issue with a sole Win98 machine connected to our networks.

Only 2 users in the Win2k AD can log into the machine, the other sin the
office cannot login using the windows 2000 loging previlages which work on
any other machine.

Is there a reason for this and how to resolve.

Many thx

When login onto the Win98 machine connected to the network using a user
account in used frequently on the other client machines on the network the
innitial login prompt asks for username, pass, domain. All these are
entered and you pass onto another login window "Welcome to windows" prompt
asking for username/pass.
After putting in the same account info as before a error message "The
windows password you typed is incorrect"

So to cut a long story short login into the win98 machine you have to login
twice, but this fails after the second login and only way to gain access is
by pressing cancel which then boots into win98.

The parculiar thing is that 2 users in the office do login into hte macine
without a problem but the others fail to login.

This is Windows 98's password caching feature. You're getting logged in to
the network, but because your password conflicts with the password it's
remembered, it chucks up an error.

You can delete all the PWL files in the Windows directory to overcome this.
Also, you can enter a blank username and blank password and it'll stop
trying to remember passwords for you.

Oh, and while you're at it, you really need to ditch Windows 98. It's not
doing you or your network any favours.

Cheers

Oli,

I like to ditch the w98 machine but unfortunately we cnat as the accounts
ppl use it to fax thing across on a modem, and there isn't any modem drivers
for it when it comes to win2k

Interesting suggetsion about delete the PWL files, I can do that but then
you go onto duggest login in as blank user/pass. This not exactly what I
want to see happen as users will not be able to use the network printers
from the machine to print of reports as well.

This is a common mistake that people make - deciding whether or not to
upgrade because of an application or hardware that a user is comfortable
with. People are afraid to change. If you are responsible for the
efficient operation of the network, YOU must do what is in the best interest
of the whole organization and convince others to accept the newer and better
ways of doing things. Windows 2000 and XP both support faxing just fine.
Yes, you may need to buy newer fax boards or new pcs entirely, but all
upgrades have a cost.
