Domain Name in Active Directory setup?

A

I'm brand new at Active Directory and DNS. I'm a bit unclear as to
what to enter for a domain name during the initial Active Directory
setup.

I've already got a domain name for my website...example.com set up and
currently the website is hosted elsewhere and has been for years.
During AD setup, I entered the name of my website, example.com, as the
domain name, and AD setup completed along with the DNS setup. On a
client machine, I change the primary DNS server to point to my server,
upon which I just installed DNS and AD. I was able to browse the
internet successfully, but was not able to browse to my website,
example.com. Could it be because I used that name during AD setup?
According to the setup, it's ok to do that. I'm obviously missing a
step or still am unclear on something.

Any ideas would be great! Thanks in advance...

You better would have called your AD-domain something like example.local.
You can't change that anymore, it would need a reinstall, so you'll need to
add a hostrecord to your DNS-server pointing to your public IP on your
website.
