domain controller not removed?

Janice

Hi all,

I had 2 DCs in the same domain (and forest), SvrA and SvrB.
I demoted SvrB to become member server, changed it's computer name to SvrC
and IP address to something else.
Then I install Win2k on another hardware, and named it SvrB with previous
SvrB's IP.
I promoted the new SvrB to become DC.

However, SvrA and the new SvrB just can't sychronize the AD.
When I try to select 'Replicate Now' on SvrA's connection, it show:
The following error occurred during the attempt to synchronize the domain
controllers. The naming context is in the process of being removed or is not
replicated from the specified server.

There's event IDs like 5781 (Dynamic registration or deregistration of one
or more DNS records failed because no DNS servers are available.)
and 1265.

I open Replication Monitor, it shows that SvrA has notified the old SvrB for
replication.
How do I remove this 'phantom' object and get SvrA to recognize the new
SvrB???

Thanks,
Janice

Try nad remove it from the DNS DB, as AD relies a lot on
this it may be still in DNS on some of your DNS server,

Thats my 2 cents anyway,
Thanks,

Remove all references to the server from DNS, WINS, and AD Sites and
Services - as well as removing the object from the computers container in AD
Users and Computers.

Hi all,

Thanks for the reply.
I've checked DNS and AD sites cleared for SvrB records before promoting the
new SvrB.
I left the WINS entrry, as the new SvrB would have the same name and IP.

Anyways, I believe somehow SvrA is still trying to connect to the old SvrB
by GUID, which is different now.

Any ideas how to overcome that?

Hi Janice,

Was AD eplicating properly between the two domain controllers before you
demoted them. If they were not, you may see the lingering object as you are
describing. Look at the DS log as well and also the following article and
see if this helps:

Lingering Objects Prevent Active Directory Replication from Occurring

for my two cents... maybe the MAc address is still in
SvrA's ARP table (though they should expire in time).

Try typing "arp -d *" at a command prompt, this will clear
the arp table.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the suggestions...
I guessed it was the DNS that's causing the problem.
The new SvrB did not register with the DNS (which til now I still wonder
why, since the zone is already 'Dynamic Update' -> 'Yes')

Anyways, I manually created all the SRV records for the new SvrB.
The tricky part was to manually create the Alias record in _mcds which I
have to enter the new SvrB's GUID.

But after all records are done, everything was ok.

Thanks again!
Janice
