domain controller demotion & role transfer

I am trying to find out if when a new domain controller is added to a site to
replace an existing, will demotion of the existing DC automatically transfer
its roles to the new DC, or must they be manually transferred prior to the
demotion,

thanks,

DCPROMO demotion will attempt to transfer the FSMO roles, but it is
recommended to transfer them manually beforehand to allow you time to check
the success (or otherwise) of the transfer. You should also consider GC
availablility. By default the first DC in the forest is automatically
enabled as a GC, but additional DCs need to be manually enabled as GCs. The
DCPROMO demotion of a DC/GC disregards GC availability.

You should also consider availability of other services that might be
running solely on the existing DC, e.g. DNS, WINS, DHCP.
