Upgrading DC Hardwared - FMSO Roles

We are in a multiple DC enviroment, but are going to be upgrading our
original DC1 and DC2 Servers. My question is this: Do you have to transfer
FSMO roles from DC1 to DC2, run DCPROMO on DC1 to demote it, and build up the
new server as DC1, then tranfer it back, or does DC2 automatically assume
those roles after DC1 is demoted?

It *should* release it's roles during dcpromo to remove AD. I would transfer
them before dcpromo just to be sure.

best practice is to transfer the FSMO roles yourself as that way YOU
designate the target server.
