Can I use the full SP2 version (~250mbs) to slipstream with the original XP
Home version or is a slipstream with SP1 a necessary intermediate step?
Does anyone know?

SP2 includes everything that SP1 had. So no, you don't need SP1.

SP2 has all the updateds of SP1 or SP1a. Just slipstream
SP2 into your Windows XP.

You do not need SP1, apart from one point. If you need the MS Java VM,
that is not on the original XP 'gold' nor in SP2, only in SP1 (and not
1a). So it would be necessary to do the SP1 - SP2 route to retain it
Or simply have a separate source to install it from
