I have a document that I am attempting to add automatic numbering to, using
the List Numbers ... my question is, does Word 2002 support the use of a
second level in automatic numbering within the same paragraph as the first
level of automatic numbering? For example:

4. (a) This would be the way I need this to look, at the same time
being able to continue to paragraph (b) in the next paragraph.

Thanks

Yes. Format a paragraph with the 4. automatic numbering. Format
the next paragraph with the (a) automatic numbering. Turn on
display of non-printing characters (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm ), format
the paragraph mark between the two paragraphs as hidden font
(Format | Font | Hidden), and turn off display of non-printing
characters.
