Does WinXP Pro install updates during shutdown?

Recently when I "Turn off Computer", it closes programs, goes back to the
blue page, then I see "Do not turn off computer...Update 1 of 2 being
installed". When I see this, I turn off my PC without letting UNKNOWN updates
be installed. Is this Windows doing the updating during shutdown - I thought
all their updates were processed while the machine was up and running. This
could be some virus installing - why wouldn't the program identify itself and
tell me what the updates are for? Is it Windows?

Thanks for any help.

If you have your Automatic Updates set to download but not install - when
you shutdown - one of the options (the one set by default if there is an
update to install) is to install updates and shutdown.
