Does Windows firewall *really* need the ALG service?

Does the firewall really need the application layer gateway service?
The doc I can find is unclear. I stopped the ALG and everything
is still functioning, including the firewall.
This is in SP2.

The short description in the "Services" console says: "Provides
support for 3rd party protocol plug-ins for Internet Connection
Sharing and the Windows Firewall." This means, that the firewall
itself does not need the ALG.

Hello - the service is set to manual, yet it is started. Something
else,
I suspect the firewall, must be issuing the start for ALG.
I found this post which has a little more info:

Stop the service, then restart Windows and see if the Firewall is
running. You can test this also at Gibson Research
