Does outlook need to be open to auto-forward emails ?

I have created a rule to automaticcaly forward emails to another email
account on the web. It works great, but only when outlook (2003) is open.

Now, how could this work even when my computer's off?

I plan to leave town soon, help is appreciated.

thank you

Of course it has to be open and your computer on. Access your mail when you
are out of town by accessing your email on the web. Or just let it accumulate
and collect it when you get home. It will stay on the server.

You could also set up a free Gmail acct to collect your POP mail. Check out
the Google Gmail site for directions.

You expect software to do anything when the OS isn't running and when
the software isn't running? If so, why would you ever have to even boot
your computer to use it? Think before asking. You really did already
know the answer.

If you don't want to use Outlook as an unreliable mail server by having
it running all the time, the OS stay loaded, your computer stay powered
on all the time, and rely on no network problems then uses a server-side
rule to forward your e-mails. You'll have to check with your
unidentified e-mail service provider (ESP) to see if they provide for a
forwarding option or let you define a rule that can forward to a
different account.

If the ESP provides a webmail interface to your account, why would you
need to forward anything? Just use the webmail interface to read your
e-mails while traveling.

You say you are leaving town. You don't mention coming back. So why
does leaving town mean you can no longer retrieve e-mails at whomever
was your ESP before?

Of course Outlook cannot do anything when it's not active. But you can
set up the mail server to do the autoforwarding.

That depends on the type of mail server, and what access you have to it.
If it's not your own mail server, then ask the mail admin to set it up.
