"does not allow long file names"

Hi,

I recently reformatted an extension drive. However, after
the reformat, whenever I create a file with more than 8
characters long, I get the message:

"does not allow long file names"

Any workaround for this?

1. What's "an extension drive"?

2. HOW are trying to "create a file"? Using Word? Or Quicken? Or some
exotic program? Or from the "DOS" window?
