Does "initializing" disk wipe data?

Sorry for such a simple question, but does it?

I have an existing dynamic disk (not part of a group) with data on it that a
new install of Windows 2000 Server doesn't recognize (shows as "Unknown") and
it's asking if I want to initialize it.

Or, if it ends up being a hardware issue, does anyone know of a utility that
can diagnose and recover dynamic disks?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Yes it does. Initializing a disk is in essence formating the disk so
that it is usable to Windows. As to how to fix or recover it I don't
know, the pros will have to answer that one for you.
