I have just had this computer for one week, Dell Inspiron 531 (desktop) with
Windows Vista Home Basic.
I have learned that I cannot open any MSworks files, nor can I open DOC,
QPW, WPD or XLS files. (I can open Adobe Acrobat and HTML files). When I try
to open these files I get a small screen for about two seconds that says
"Task Work Launcher", then I get another small screen that says "Works unable
to open the project you selected".
Any ideas?
Thanks.

You need the proper applications in order to open files of those extensions

QPW-Corel Quatro Pro

WPD-Word Perfect

XLS-Excel

Works Does not open files with those extensions. You can get an Excel
viewer from the Micrisoft Office website:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/HA010449811033.aspx Understand,
these are viewers and cannot be used to work with the files.

File extensions need to be associated with specific applications, In the
case of the extensions you specified, these are proprietary and require the
applications mentioned above. If these opened on your previous setup, you
must have had the applications installed as well.

Michael, If I had those applications, they must have come with my old
computer (Dell Dimension 2350, XP, SP@), I do not have the computer knowledge
needed to do those things. How do I go about getting the applications to
load? Thanks for your help.

You need to understand, those applications are not a part of Windows, not a
part of the operating system. They probably came bundled with your old
computer by the manufacturer. You likely didn't have separate setup disks
for installing those applications either and if you did, because they were
OEM versions, Original Equipment Manufacturer, they are tied to that system
and can't be installed on this computer.

Aside from Excel that has a viewer to which I provided a link you might be
able to find ways of viewing the files through the manufacturer websites
Other than that, you would need to purchase Vista compatible versions of
those applications.

Quatro Pro and WordPerfect...www.corel.com

Excel, you can purchase Excel separately from the entire Office package but
for the best compatibility with Vista, I wouldn't go back eirlier than Excel
2003.

If you purchase the separate applications, WordPerfect and QuatroPro might
be a part of Corel Office Suite, Excel can be purchased separately from MS
Office bot to ensure compatibility you probably should not purchase a
version prior to 2003.

Installation is simply a matter of placing the disk in the DVD drive and
following the prompts but if you actually wish to work with the files in
addition to being able to view them, you would need to purchase the
appropriate applcations.

For word document and excel documents, you download viewers for these. You
can not edit from the viewer, but you can read them. For Corel, someone
else have a solution.

If you want a program that you can view and work with the files > search
Google for "Open Office" a OS free office suite.

I went to Openoffice and downloaded 2.2 and got the same results. The
Microsoft Task Launcher still comes up and says file is corrupt.
I contacted Dell (via email) and they tell me I have MS Works in the new
computer and need MS Office. Theere are several versions of MS Office and I
don't know which one I need. Still hoping to not have to buy any of them.

works will not open office files. Best solution: install OpenOffice.org -
it imports and exports ms office files and is a work alike for ms office.
OpenOffice also imports word perfect files.

I installed openoffice and it did not work. Do I have to uninstall Microsoft

Hi,

I read your posts and admit that I am in a similar situation.
my new PC came with Windows Vista HomePremium / MS Office 2007
1. I did a research project in Powerpoint which my teacher cannot read.
2. I created a document for a friend which cannot be opened.
Just about at witts end.
I really need a walk thru at this point. All suggestions would be appreciated.
Sould I remove the MS and reinstall 2003 version that I had with XP.
