Documents are disappearing off my hard drive and Email (sent folder)

Hi there - a friend of mine is encountering severe problems - their MS
documents (word and excel) are disappearing from their hard drive.
In addition - emails that were previously "sent" with these documents
attached have disappeared from their MS Outlook "sent folder".
Can't find the documents anywhere!
Any ideas ? I am assume some sort of virus is present.
 
If you assume a virus I think it would be prudent to scan the computer for viruses (or spyware).

"save" a test e-mail/doc re-named eg:222 or easier remembered name and
use the search facility. You may just find all the other "missing"
stuff there too.
 
Email would be contained in the OL pst file
If you cannot see them, within OL, its possibly a view issue
