Documents and links slow to open

I'm not sure if this is a Windows problem or an Office problem...
Starting just a few days ago, all of a sudden it's started taking 1 to 2
minutes for MS-Word to open a document when I double click on the document
itself. It makes no difference if the Word is already open or not. If I
open a document from within Word using the Open menu, the document opens
quickly.

Also, if I click on a link from with in an e-mail in Outlook, it also takes
1 to 2 minutes for that page to open in IE.

I never had this problem before and I can't figure out what changed to cause
this. Any ideas and possible solutions?

I appreciate any help in advance.

What antivirus software are you running?
What startup items do you have in Word (tools, templats & addins)

Are you using Word as your email editor in Outlook? And if you disable that,
any change?

Thanks for the reply... unfortunately it doesn't fix my problem. I don't
have any add-ins or templates or anything else at startup in Word. I was
using Word as the e-mail editor in Outlook, I tried disabling it and it made
no difference. I was using Norton for my Anti-virus program, but just
switched to AVG. I completely uninstalled Norton. The problem is the same
either way.

It's a problem that just came up all of a sudden. I did a defrag of my
harddrive, but that didn't help either.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

How fast is Word to open when you just launch it from the start menu? Any
different?

Did this problem coincide with your NAV uninstall, by any chance?

When I launch Word directly from the Start menu, it opens instantly. And if
I open a doc file from the Open menu from within Word, the file opens
instantly. It's only when I click on a doc file from outside of Word that it
takes up to 2 minutes to open. It doesn't make any difference if an instance
of Word is already open or not. The same thing is true for Excel worksheets
and for IE links.

I started having the problem before I removed Norton, and still have it
after it's been removed.

Thanks again for your follow up on this.

Hey - I just figured out that my problem came after the newest update
downloaded for Google Desktop Search. I closed that and my problem is
solved. Now I've got to find out how to fix the problem from them... it's a
great tool, but not practical for me if it causes this problem.

I'd still be interested in any ideas you may have for that.

Thanks

Sorry, I don't use Google Desktop Search....but I'm glad you found & worked
around the problem.

If you have System Mechanics in your system, prevent "SMsystemanalyzer.exe"
loading on startup. Deleting its registry key is the only way.

This problem can also be caused by ACT!8. The preload setting needs to be
changed from -stayrunning to -preload in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
