Document lost during save

Occasionally I completely lose an entire Word document when trying to save
it. I get a series of error messages

the first one reads “Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission
error (E:\0\!Current\Lesson\ScreenLesson.doc)â€

That message is immediately followed by one that reads: “Word failed reading
from this file ( ~WRL209.tmp)â€

Then there is at least one, perhaps two more messages – which I have yet to
capture since I can only copy one message out of the sequence.

I have had this happen several times over the past few weeks – and it is
most apt to happen when I am preparing a weekly lesson. It happened again
this morning.

The process of preparing the lesson includes copying text from a source
external to Word into a Word document. I then run a macro I have created to
clean up formatting in the document.

That is followed by some proof-reading and editing. The problem is most apt
to occur when I save after doing this – as it did this morning. Having had
this happen a number of times, I decided to do a “Select all,†copy the
entire document and paste it into a new document. I was able to do that
successfully, but then after the save error occurred, I found the new
document I had pasted the text into to be empty.

In the folder where I was trying to do the save I found two temporary files:
~$eenLesson.doc
~WRL2092.tmp

I was able to open ~$eenLesson.doc, but it contained only my name, some page
breaks and some box shaped characters. When I try to open the tmp file I get
a “File not found†message.

What do I need to do to keep this from happening?

If your "e" drive is a data stick or some other external media, Don't save to
it, save it to your hard drive and copy it. Saving to external media can
cause corruptions. Also, to work on the file, copy from your media to your
hard drive then open it.

If it is a network drive, something may be wrong with your permissions or
local profile. Get the network boys on the case. In this case, again try
saving to your hard drive first and then copy until they have resolved the
issue.

Hope this makes sense and helps,

No, my e drive is NOT a data stick. It is a logical drive where I keep all
the files I create. I have had the PC for over a year and have saved many
thousands of files to it -- the vast majority of which are probably Word
files. While I have a small peer to peer network, this drive is local to my
main PC. -- the one where the problem is occuring.

Others have suggested that E:\ may be a removable or network drive. If
either is the case, be sure to check the box for "Make local copy of files
stored on network or removable drives" on the Save tab of Tools | Options.
Note, however, that, as Graham pointed out, it is far preferable just to
copy the file to the HD and not try to work from a removable drive at all.

A couple ideas from a totally different angle. One is to explore for it
being a fiel and folder permission problem. Keeping everything else the
same, try to save a different file to that same location. And, if you have
a problem with that, try manipulating files from that folder with just
windows explorer. (delete, change name etc.)

Explore the properties on the file and the relevant folders. Make sure no
restrictions are checked. (like read only) Sometimes (like if a folder was
copied from a CD) those boxes can get checked.

Your exclamation point folder name might be a problem although it shouldn't
be.

If you have Vista I'd recommend an upgrade to XP as there's whole lot of new
roadblocks designed into Vista.
