New laptop, Vista pre-installed. Opens all doc attachments from e-mail, but
in some cases (not all), after a few seconds I get the message "MS Office
Word has ceased to function ... and is now closing down" (or something
similar). Saving the attachment to desktop doesn't help. Mozilla
Thunderbird; MS Office version: 2003. Suggestions ? (e.g. spend good and
scarce money on newer version of Office ?)

Office 2003 will run just fine in Vista. Try running Office repair and
see if that helps.

Ta Frank - I'll try that (once I've discovered what and where it is) and let
you know.

I think its located at:

Word/help/detect & repair.

I think. I'm not at a box with 2003 installed.

Sorry, can't find detect&repair. I suspect some hidden Vista feature that
doesn't like my version of Office. At a loss what to do.

What antivirus do you have installed? Either of the usual horrors -
McAfee or Norton? If so, try turning off its 1) email scanning - which
gives you no additional protection; 2) disabling the
integration/scanning with MS Office. I know that Norton has an Office
plugin and I suspect that McAfee does also.

Thanks, Malke. I'll try that and let you know - though the second of your
suggestions will probably have me running round in circles as I have little
familiarity with Norton (alas, it came with the machine. What other
antivirus would you suggest ? - I have Kespesky tucked away somewhere, but
not installed).
