Opening Attachments in Windows Mail

E

Elaine

I wa always able to ooen attachments in my e-mail by clicking on the clip on
the side of the e-mail and it automatically opened. All of a sudden, it
won't open, I have to save it and then open it from my documents. When I
click on it, Word or Excel will come up, but it says it can't find the file
that was attached - and that never happened in the past. I "repaired" my
Office 2007 in case something was wrong there, but that didn't help. Does
anyone know what might have happened - Is this a Vista problem - and how do I
fix it, so I can once again open my e-mail attachments directly from the
e-mail. Thanks in advance

Hi Elaine--

Try right clicking the attachment>open>browse to C:\Program Files which
should be the default browse and click on Windows Mail.

Good luck,

The attachment is shown by a picture of a paper clip on the right side of the "TO" part of the e-mail. If I right click on the paper clip, and then left click on the attachment itself, a window opens up asking me to save the attachment, but not giving me a choice to save it to anywhere but my Documents. If I left click the paper cliip and then left click the attachmnent, it opens either word, power point, excel, whatever, but then says it cannot find the file - I never had to do this before. When I left clicked the paper clip, and then left clicked the attachment, it opened up in word, excel, powerpoint, etc. right away - and had the file attachment there in that program. Appreciate any help you might suggest, as this just flaws me - It was working fine for the past few years, and just came up with this problem. Thanks in advance.

Hi Elaine--

I'm sure you have verified the attachment is from a trusted source, but what
type of doc, or etc. is the attachment? If the attachment is not a zipped
file, etc. or a pic, it could well open up into Word or Excel, or PP but not
all of them from the same attachment I would think.

What kind of attachment is it? If you right click the clip>properties what
type file does the properties dialogue box say it is. That should tell you
what you want to open it up.

The attachments I am trying to open that won't are ones from friends that I
receive attachments from all the time - and they are really updated lists in
Excel, documents in Word and photosin Power Point - sothat is not the
problem. You know, when I got each of the responses from you, and I clicked
on the line that said read the response, I also got a blank page, saying done
at the bottom. Finally, I was able to open the lst one you sent and this
one. There was a second reply I recived an e-mail about that I still cannot
open when I click the link.

Thanks for trying to help. I remembered a few moments ago that IE8 asked me
to install that program these last few days, so I went to a forum on that and
saw that sometimes caused problems. I followed a link to uninstall or "fix"
it, and I nor have reverted back to IE7 and it is not a problem. This
computer with VISTA had the problem with attachments, apparently from IE8,
since it is no longer a problem. I have IE* on an XP computer and it doesn't
seem to cause the problem with attachments there in Outlook Express - but did
so with Windows Mail. Hope my "find" helps someone else.

Do a system restore to before this happened .

By doing what you're doing, your new text is masked by many newsreaders,

I had the same problem after an automatic update from Internet Explorer 7 to
Internet Explorer 8 was downloaded and installed on my computer. I
contacted my computer manufacturer tech service and was advised there is an
unresolved issue between Vista 64 bit and Windows Mail. They uninstalled
IE8 and IE7 was reinstalled. No more problem.
