Hi JJ,
Office 2003 should be able to detect the earlier version. I believe the
default installation will overwrite your existing installation, unless you
specify a different install path. (If I recall correctly, you need to use a
custom install in order to pick a different path).
If you purchased an upgrade version, which is less expensive than the full
retail version, then you should not uninstall Office 2000 because you'll want
to ensure that it is detected correctly.
Please note that this newsgroup is for questions and answers pertaining to
the use of Microsoft Access, which is one of the programs in Office
Professional. However, it is not a catch-all group for Office Professional
questions.

I am running OP 2000 of my XP system and I just purchase OP 2003. It will be
arriving in a few days. My question is do I need to uninstall my old version
with all the downloaded updates before installing this new version? Or will
the new version give me the option of doing it for me?
