Do I need to slipstream sp2 with XP-Home to undergo a system repair

C

Charles...

The other day I tried to do a system repair using my original XP-Home cd
SP1...

At the repair option, I chose 'R', it done its checks etc then moved on to
the admin password bit,
I hit enter without inputting anything as I never created an admin password
from the beginning...

After a very short spell, the system then hands back to me with the cursor
blinking expectantly....

I feel nothing that had happened at all....

I have read that a system repair can only be done with a system disk equal
to or higher than the version you are attempting to repair...
My cd is OEM XP-Home SP1, I do have an original MS SP2 cd too...
Would I need to slipstream the 2 so that I can then attempt the
repair....????

If you currently have SP2 on your system, you need (of course) an XP CD with
SP2 incorporated in it, to repair your SP2 system.

Yes I do have SP2 on it... I forgot to confirm that...

So, it is down to creating a slipstream cd then... Cheers for the
confirmation....

Nice bit of info, I didn't realise that there were two repair options

Those sites were quite interesting too....

Thanks for that....

I just created a slipstreamed XP SP2 disk too, it was quite painless... ;)

It sounds like you are selecting repair at the wrong step. The first option
to repair takes you to the Recovery Console. You need to select repair, the
second time it appears. See the following article for information.

How to Repair Install: (Toward the bottom of the page)

Create a new slipstreamed XP SP2 installation disk.

That's correct. The restore CD your OEM provided will not work, and you need
a real installation CD.

An installation CD? You buy it. You can check with your manufacturer to see
if they will sell it to for a low price, but chances are that you will have
to buy a copy on teh regular retail market.

Personally, I would never choose to buy a computer that came with an
operating system unless I got a complete generic installation CD for that
operating system.

How did I get on.... Mmmm....

Absolutely Terrible.... The repair install stops with 34 minutes to go...

Have rebooted several times now, setup retarts & stops at the same place....
no error messages, nothing, it just sits there :(

I am now having to use another pc to access here.... :(

Glad this information helped. Let us know how the repair install works for
