Hello All

I have a problem! I have a P111 450 dual box running 2K with SP3 and
its very stable and capable. I recently bought one of the latest MSI
CD/DVD writers DR8-A and it starts writing on the Verbatim CDs starting
about 1cm from the centre, something I have never seen before. The
disks can not be reliably read on my Mac. Writing to a TDK disk makes
it very slow to read the image files on the MSI drive and the disk is
not seen on the other CD drive on this box, and it is totally not seen
on the Mac.

Now the suppliers have sent me a replacement drive and it is no better.
They have suggested that firstly I put on SP4 and also update the Intel
440BX chipset. I am most reluctant to do this especially as the
Plextor 24/10/40A writer that was in this 2K box has been turning out
trouble free CD's seen without any difficulty on all the PC's and the
Mac. Incidentally I have been using the supplied Nero software on both
these drives removing the version not in use first.

I am told by the MSI suppliers that this drive uses new technology and
therefore I should carry out these upgrades. I just hate to alter things
when they have been working fine, and my preferred choice would be to
sling the MSI drive and get a Plextor DVD writer in place of it.

Any suggestions would b e most welcome

Thanks

Richard

Can't say it'll work for sure but you could always make an Image of your current PC (using Ghost or some other imaging software), and then installing SP4 and such. That way if something breaks you can reimage it back to where you started without any worry abotu losing anything...

I'd do the chipset update first, make sure the computer is running
stable, then try SP4. I've had lots of trouble with SP4 and think it's
buggy on some machines but an awful lot of people report no problems
with it at all. Of course, backup your stuff 1st.
