Do I need Microsoft .NET Framework?

There's always a "gotcha" if you trust something too much, including
automatic windows update.

The only time I've used Net Framework 2.0 was with TurboTax 2007 in XP. I
restored the entire thing from an image file when I wanted to work on taxes,
and saved to image file again until done. It wasn't part of my day to day
use. Note that I only used this when doing taxes, not for daily use. It
was windows update that presented 2.0 and after for download, which I opted
out on for regular daily use.

Unlike 3rd party software whose subsequent versions were essentially the
same product that did the same identical job, Net Framework subsequent
versions are not fitting strictly into that assumed defintion when a user
downloads in that former assumption. That is what is most misleading about
the entire Net Framework versions at face value to the user. By the actual
usage of each version of Net Framework, subsequent and prior versions are
not actual updates or upgrades to that version. They are entirely different
softwares written for other purposes. Therefore, windows update is broken
when recommending subsequent numerical versions as an update. And broken if
automatically installing subsequent Net Framework versions.

Hi Dave,

Unfortunately, the software that requires v2 I use pretty frequently. I
had installed 3.5 when it first came out (trying to stay current you
know), but this last update screwed everything up, so I removed all of
them and just installed v2 again.

I see now that SP2 for v2 can ONLY be installed with the 3.5 service
pack. That's bunk. When I downloaded the SP2 file by itself and
launched it (from the 3.5 SP site), I was informed I didn't have any
program to update!

That's odd, I let TurboTax 2007 install Net Framework 2.0 as part of the
installation package. I did not do any updates to SP2 for that particular
XP installation. Needless to say, Net Framework 3.0 and 3.5 were not
installed. However, your previous installation and deinstallation of 3.5
may have left registry entries indicating 3.5 is installed to Windows
update.

Last I looked, each version of Net Framework is available as its own
download and installable independently.

3.5

If, like MS says, one subsequent version is an improvement over the
previous, I would conclude you could uninstall your 3rd party app that needs
a previious version. Uninstall the previous version of Net Framework.
Install the newfangled version, and install the said 3rd party software.
AND, uninstall any previous versions of Net Framework on the PC. Somehow, I
think this is misleading at best.

CDOs are how we got here.
A modified version, new taxes in the future, is how Congress will get us
out?

That is strange you haven't been offered the 3.5 update. Anyone with
(don't know about 1, 1.1) 2, 3, 3.5 is offered the SP through WU/MS
update. MS figures if you have one, you NEED them all!
