.net framework

I am using XP sp2. Over time, Updates has installed .net framework 1.1, .net
framework 2.0 sp1, .net framework 3.0 sp1, and .net framework 3.5. And now I
am being invited to to update .net framework 1.1 even though I have .net
framework 3.5. Do I need all these versions of .net framework?

I am having some BSOD events when I Restart or Turn Off, and then on
occasion, some infinitely recurring requests to notify Microsoft about a
serious error recovery event when I finish loading the desktop on a reboot.
System Recovery does not usually help and it is usually by doing a registry
clean that I get full control back until a reboot sometimes starts the
problem cycle again. Could all of these .net framework versions be
contributing to my problems?

The BSOD events are of the 0x0000000A or 0x000000C2 variety and the infinite
loop error events are of the 256_1 type. I have read a lot about all of these
common notifications, and it seems that the resolution to them usually
consists of using the types of trial and error methods I have been trying. I
have now reached the point of investigating whether all of these .net
framework updates are walking over each other.

I would appreciate hearing your explanations and advice about my .net
framework questions.

Thanks

Most of the time, you can use the latest version of the .NET Framework to
run applications that were created by using earlier versions of the .NET
Framework and sometimes not and it needs to run it using the earlier versions.

If you run a program and you don't have the needed .net framework file, the
program will fail to work. If all the programs you are running that needed
..net framework files runs fine, soon you may encounter programs that will
fail if you don't have the needed .net framework file

You may have several versions of the .NET Framework installed on your
computer. Each version of the .NET Framework can co-exist with the other
versions on the computer.

The .net frameworks are actually different applications so that 1 is not
equal to 2, and so on. Blame MS for the silly naming convention.
Actually, it's more the exception that a later .net will suffice for an
earlier one. Normally a specific number is needed.

Unless you are running some fairly "elegant" applications it's probably
that you don't need all or even any of the frameworks you have. I've
never quite understood how people get them with their updates, because I
don't unless it's a patch like the 1.1 patch.

Anyway, one easy way to see if you need them is to find their home
folder and rename it. I usually add the letters OLD to the end so they
stay easy to find. Then, if a program looks for them it won't be able
to find that partifular folder because it's been renamed to something
else. That will tell you it needs that particular .net framework
because your software will continue to run fine, or it won't.
Usually if a program needs the .net and can't find it, it'll pop an
error message up that gives you the number it needs and even a link to
download it from. If that happens with your favorite application, then
go back and rename the folder removing the OLD from the end of it and
all should work fine. Sometimes it might require a REstart before
things start to work again.

Or, just copy t hem off to a CD or DVD and Remove them. If you need
them it's a matter of simply reinstalling them again. I prefer the
Rename options though; it's faster.

My two cents anyway,

If the .NET Framework versions are installed, one or more applications
you're running needs them.

If Windows Update offers you a critical update or Service Pack for a .NET
Framework version, install it.
