Do I need a new router?

I keep getting a message in Windows XP that my network connection has been
lost, seconds later it says I have successfully connected. Sometimes I can't
get to web sites, and maybe this is a separate issue, but it takes awhile to
get a new IP from the DHCP. I'm always able to communicate with the router
and other computers on the network.

This only happens less than 1% of the time, but it's annoying. Is this due
to a bad router or cable modem, or ISP? I'm not sure how to troubleshoot
this. All computers on my network do this so it's not the individual
computer network cards.

If your router is not configured to respond to the probe messages from your
ISP then the ISP will determine that the connection is not in use and will
disconnect you. The router then immediately reconnects you. You should
check with your ISP to see if your system is correctly configured for their
network.

As an experiment try connection your cable modem directly to one
computer and see if you still experience the random outages. That
will clear up the status of the router with respect to this problem.

Note that with the modem connected directly you will no longer have
the router's NAT firewall protecting you so you might want to ensure
that the Windows XP firewall is operational for the duration of this
test.

Good luck

As a side note...have you simply rebooted the router & modem? I remember a
while back having minor problems with my router and because of local storms I
had unplugged everything. After they were rebooted the problems disappeared.

We are using Win2003 server installations. We also had run into this .
Turned out to be the ISP configuration on our system.Check with your ISP for
configuration set up and help

There aren't that many settings to configure for DHCP. Any specifics I can
try myself? I'll call Time Warner Roadrunner, but they are going to be
like -- what's a router? how are you connected to us if you didn't install
our CD?

You never have needed to install Time Warner's software to use their
high-speed internet service :-)

Horse Hockey!! RR's support page will tell how to set up everything,
by following a few _simple_ instructions.
