Hi, all,
I am running Windows 2000 Professional, and over the last
year, have had to reinstall it twice for different
reasons. On both occasions, after installation, at
roughly the same time every night, at two different times,
my computer boots itself up. I've tried searching
through my programs that offer automatic updates and made
sure they are turned off, and I've gone into task manager
and turned that off, too. But my machine still turns
itself on. Last year (when I still had warranty on my
machine), the techs told me to turn off a switch in the
bios. That worked. But I didn't keep my notes, never
expecting this to happen again. Can anyone give me a hand
with this? Thanks.

Possibly 'wake on lan' or similar
Allthough if you amended bios previously, and saved, a reinstall of win
would not effect bios.
Check yr event logs

Gremlins? Of course you've got gremlins,
Although not included with the original software
All Versions of Microsoft Windows will attract a
myriad of unearthly mythical creatures (especially the
disruptive gremlins) within minutes of initial boot up.
Microsoft adamantly denies this of course.

The only BIOS settings that I know of that will 'power on' a machine are
usually found in the 'Power Management' section. Look for things like "Wake
on LAN". You should disable / turn off all the "Wake On.." settings if you
want your PC to only power on when you press the switch.

Also, your PC is probably set to hibernate rather than powering off - you
can change the function of the power button in the BIOS, or by using the
"Power Options" in "Control Panel" of Windows (it's on the Advanced tab).
