have a satellite 1625 cdt (running windows 98 ) which has no built in
ethernet port and so was connecting via usb from a dsl hookup. This worked
fine but recently we changed to cable and I could not go on line. I bought a
10/100 compact usb adapter which is plugged into a wireless g router both
made by linksys. (my wife's new machine works perfectly using the router)

I've been on the phone with linksys and optimum on line and it appears that
the cable modem and router as well as the usb adapter are all working and
present in device manager and network connections. However, every time I open
my browser I get a dns error message on the bottom line of the browser.
Desperate to solve this problem I foolishly thought upgrading to windows xp
home would solve the problem. It's very nice but the problem remains.

I considered wiping the drive clean and doing a clean install of windows
98/xp but that's pretty drastic. In these desperate times can anyone help???

It turned out to be zone alarm running in the background, that was blocking
the browser from connecting to any websites. After disabling the fire wall
everything was back to normal..... go figure.

I had to delete and reinstall zone alarm to get it to work properly.
