dns client connectivity issue

Hi

I'm running XP pro, with a dsl connection to the net. The PC connects to a
Netgear firewall which then connects to an adsl modem. When my PC is
switched on I lose internet connectivity after a period of a couple of hours
of inactivity. I can get it back by restarting the DNS client service.

Why is this happening and how can I stop it?

what if you simply start a new instance of internet explorer on some website
like your ISP's

No, that does not make a difference. All other software that uses maned
servers rather than straight IP addressess fails also. No IM, No Outlook
express, No Firefox, No IE, No news ticker toolbar. All these things regain
their connectivity if I restart the DNS client service (this service is not
stopped by the way, but a restart makes it work again)

Cheers

Have a look in device manager..right click your NIC..properties and on the
power management tab make sure "Allow the computer to turn off this device
to save power" is not checked.
