I have installed a new SONY external DVD/CD RW/R to my
four year old Sony Vaio laptop as my internal one has
crashed (ie the E drive] so I have disabled it. My device
manager recognizes the new hardware but I can not get it
to work. The new unit plays DVDS & CDS but when I try to
burn photos and data to a CD I receive a message saying
DMA is disabled. Can any one please tell me how to enable
this DMA. I have gone to some help sites but I am having
trouble to correct the solution. I am running Windows XP
I would love to rectify this problem. Thanking you in
antipation of a reply Kiwi

Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device
Manager, double-clicking the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller icon. Double-click
on your Primary IDE Channel and choose the Advanced Settings tab. If DMA
is available, you'll be able to choose it there.

hi in answer to your question DMA stands for direct
memory access to enable for your CD-ROM drive in Win
98/Me.

1. click Start, click settings and then click contrtol
panel.

2. double click the System icon.

4. Ensure that "the View devices by type"option at the
top of the dialog box is selected.

5. click the + symbol next to CDROM.

6. Double-click any items that appear. If more than one
item is listed, select the first one and complete these
steps. Then repeat these steps for the second item.

7. Click the settings tab.

8. if there is not already a check box in the box next to
DMA, place one there. If there is already a check in the
box next to DMA, select Cancel select cancel and bypass
the rest of the steps.

9. At the warning message that appears, click ok.

10. click the ok button.

11. In windows Me systems, click the close button.

12. When you see the message about restarting (or
shutting down)your computer for the change to take effect
click yes.

I hope this helps
