Distorted colour pactches

My screen has small patches of distorted colour which I can only discribe as
it looks like the contrast is set too high. This appears on booting up (pink
areas on blue microsoft colour) where the user name menu is as well as any
other pictures and graphics. I have tried different screen resolutions and
chanded to 16 bit colour but the problem still remains. As I said it looks as
if the contrast is too high in some areas, I'm sorry I can't explain it any
better. This is bugging me as I feel it should be simple to rectify, but I'm
stumped

Only a guess but it sounds like the flat panel display is going bad.

thanks fot that. It wouldn't suprise me if you're right as the display is
just about the only part of the laptop which hasn't been replaced at least
once in the 13 months I've had it :/
