Displaying style names?

Using Word 2002 SP-1.

How do I display the style names used in a document in a window
alongside the document?

No, this isn't what I want -- this just displays the style of a piece of
*selected* text, and gives you the option to change it.

I want to see *all* the styles in use in a document, and usually don't
want to change anything. I have seen a Word user open a narrow window to
the left of the document window, and the narrow window showed the style
names approximately level with the places where they occurred in the
document. Thus it is easy to scroll quickly through the document to see
if it contains any unapproved styles.

At the time I didn't think to ask the user what version of Word he was
using, or how he displayed the style names.

Select the menu Tools, options, choose the tab view (I think it is called)
at the bottom of the screen you will see width of ... put in a measurement
(In the dutch version I generally use a couple of centimeters) and hit OK.
All your documents will now show the used styles alongside your document.

zero. An inch is usually sufficient for most style names.

Ian, in order for the styles to be alongside the left of
your document, you must be in Normal or Outline View
(suggest Normal View), not page layout view. Then if you
don't see the style names on the left, go to Tools,
Options, View, and at the bottom of that dialog box you
will see under Outline & Normal Options "style area
width." Fill in the desired width (such as .5). Your
styles should then come into view.

Gotcha! .... As Luc has said elsewhere, this applies only in normal/outline
view - tools > options > view and set a figure in the Style Area Width large
enough to accommodate the length of your style names 4cm should be plenty.

You can double-click on a style name in the style area to bring up the
style dialog.
This can be handy if you have to clean up a document.
