Display trouble

I have recently had to wipe my computer clean and start again. I have
Windows XP Pro 2002 installed now.
The trouble is that the display is different from what it used to be. It is
like a widescreen image (like what you get on the TV where the images are
'stretched' or elongated). Also, my scrolling is not as smooth as it used to
be, it is very 'jerky'.
Can anyone help me please?
Thanks

Check the front of your monitor for buttons to correct the screen settings.
Re: Scrolling.
Start>Control Panel>Mouse>Pointer Options tab

Go to the manufacturers site and download install updated drivers per their
instructions. If your machine is an OEM you can get the drivers from your machines
manufacturer. On the other side you can go to the manufacturers site of the video
chip/adapter and get drivers.

Thanks for reply.
I have a laptop which does not have screen settings buttons on it.

I have already tried the Control Panel 'Mouse' route, which does not change
anything......

I am mystified....
